About Rose-Marie Burger

Rose-Marie Burger is a South African visual artist known for her bold, abstract, and minimal line work, as well as her deep commitment to sustainability. Rooted in curiosity and driven by innovation, her art explores the weight of space, abstractions and the human form, using deceptively simple lines & shapes to evoke presence, emotion, and balance.

As the founder of Tittybutt.Studio (2012–present), she is recognised for her experimental and innovative approach to abstractions. Fond of mixed media and experimenting the artist is in a transitional phase at the moment focusing on creating abstracted cut-out paper artworks series as a form of abstract exploration.

Rosie’s sustainability work bridges the creative and fashion industries to build healthier systems that support both environmental goals and social upliftment. Her mission is to foster corporate symbiosis that benefits communities through job creation and skills development.

In 2019, seeking deeper creative connection and personal transformation, Rose-Marie relocated off-grid to a remote farm in South Africa’s Northern Cape. Immersed in silence and surrounded by space, she embraced a slower, more intentional way of living and creating. Scarce resources became a catalyst for innovation—most notably, she began hand-making paper from denim off-cuts, a process developed through necessity and experimentation.

Her work is celebrated not only for its striking aesthetic but also for its social and environmental impact. In 2020, she was invited to Levi’s Haus of Strauss in Johannesburg as part of the brand’s 25th anniversary celebration in Africa. There, she participated in a panel of change-makers alongside, led denim papermaking, abstract art workshops and collaborated with Levi’s & fashion designer, Rich Mnisi.

Her collaboration with Rich Mnisi marked a global first and was showcased at Berlin Fashion Week—an initiative she continues to evolve in pursuit of long-term transformation in fashion and manufacturing.

For Rose-Marie, art is more than personal expression—it’s a vehicle for education, activism, and community-building. She facilitates creative sustainability workshops, firmly believing in the importance of investing in the next generation. She views creativity not as a rare talent, but as a universal muscle we all have—the key to navigating uncertainty, solving problems, and reimagining the world.

Guided by thinkers like Gunter Pauli (author of The Blue Economy), Rose-Marie’s work exists at the intersection of ecology, innovation, and aesthetics—where nothing is wasted, and everything has purpose. Her vision is grounded in a clear critique of elitism in the art world. For her, success is measured not by applause, but by authenticity: creating from within, not for approval.

She is currently expanding her practice through artist residencies, private and online art classes, workshops, and creative brand collaborations.
